Real Results on Our Long Island Patient

How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are titanium posts that replace missing tooth roots. They are biocompatible, so over time they naturally fuse with your jawbone tissue, becoming a part of your anatomy. Dr. Buono can attach custom-made crowns, bridges, or dentures to your implants at our Long Island office.

Dental Implant Qualifications

You must meet certain requirements in order for implants to be successful. When you have your free consultation with our dentist in Long Island, NY, Dr. Buono will perform an oral exam to determine if you are a good candidate. To qualify, you need:

  • Adequate Jaw Tissue

Tooth loss leads to jawbone atrophy. If your bone is not dense enough to support implants, we can arrange a bone grafting procedure that will restore your candidacy.

  • Healthy Gums

Candidates for implants must be free of gum disease. If you suffer from a periodontal condition, we will first treat that before moving forward with implants.

  • Good Overall Health

Patients must be in good overall health before undergoing a dental operation. Patients who smoke, have uncontrolled diabetes, or have an autoimmune disorder may have trouble healing from implant surgery.

Dental Implant Timeline

Dr. Buono works with a team of highly trained oral surgeons to provide his implant patients with the best possible care. The oral surgeon performs the surgical placement of the implant, while Dr. Buono handles the creation and placement of the implant-supported crown, bridge, or denture.

After your initial consultation at our Long Island office, you can expect the following treatment timeline:

The complete dental implant process takes several months, but it results in a functional, natural-looking smile that is worth the wait.
The complete dental implant process takes several months, but it results in a functional, natural-looking smile that is worth the wait.

Implant Surgery

Your oral surgeon will create small incisions in your gums. Then, they will insert the titanium implants through the incisions and into your jawbone.

Healing Period

Over the next three to six months, your dental implants will fuse with the bone tissues in your jaw in a process known as "osseointegration."

Abutments

Once the implants and jawbone have fully integrated, you will undergo a second procedure to attach abutment pieces. The abutments will sit at the gumline and serve as the point of connection between the titanium implants and your restoration.

Impressions

Once the gums have healed, Dr. Buono can begin preparing your implant-supported crown, bridge, or denture. We will use our state-of-the-art Cadent iTero Scanner to take digital impressions of your mouth. Our practice was among the first to adopt iTero digital scanning technology.

Fabrication

Dr. Buono will use your scans to design a precise, natural-looking restoration out of materials of your choosing. Then, we will send our design to our trusted dental lab, where skilled technicians will craft your restoration to fit your unique specifications.

Placement

Once your crown, bridge, or denture is ready, you will return to our Garden City office to have your prosthetic tooth or teeth placed. Our dentist will secure the restoration and check the overall look and fit, making any necessary adjustments. You will leave our office with a complete, confident smile!

Maintaining Dental Implants

Maintaining implants is as easy as taking care of your natural teeth. To keep your implants and the attached restorations in good condition, we recommend:

Practicing Good Oral Hygiene

Brush your teeth and floss on a daily basis to keep both your implants and your natural teeth healthy.

Attending Dental Checkups

It is important to visit Garden City Smiles twice a year so we can thoroughly clean your teeth and keep an eye on your implants.

Avoiding Excess Force

Just like your natural teeth, an implant-supported restoration can wear down over time if you grind your teeth, open packages with your teeth, or excessively eat hard, sticky foods.
